Government Collecting Newborn DNA

Posted by Ryan

The state governments have been collecting DNA from newborns without parental consent.Minnesota is currently dealing with this issue of genetic privacy. The practice was discovered around ten years ago. The storing of DNA data brings with it the possibility of genetic discrimination from the health insurance providers which pay for the genetic screening. The data is not stored anonymously. Some researchers believe that this practice has been kept quiet for over thirty years.
Privacy is one of the most important principles of a free society. There should be a legitimate fear of what the warehousing of DNA information could bring to society. This could be the first step down the road of a genetically discriminate society where only those with specific genetic traits will be afforded the highest level of freedom.
